A jockey in the form of his life at Newcastle and Tony Carroll bids to continue red-hot run - punting pointers for Saturday
Punting pointers for some of Saturday's meetings
Newcastle: Mulrennan out to make hay again
No jockey has started the new year in better style here than Paul Mulrennan and he has four rides on the card as he bids to continue his terrific form in the north-east.
The Group 1-winning jockey has partnered six winners at Gosforth Park already in 2025 from just 17 rides. They have come at a strike-rate at 35 per cent, and a £1 level-stake bet on his mounts would have yielded a £13.16 profit.
Mulrennan's winners came in a brace of trebles at two meetings in a row and his strongest chance of a winner looks to be the Jim Goldie-trained Midnight Lion, who bids for a course-and-distance hat-trick in the 1m2f handicap (2.00).
He also rides Doon The Glen in the 5f classified contest (2.35), but he must bounce back from a poor showing at the course's New Year's Day card. His other mount is the John Wainright-trained Biplane in the concluding 6f fillies' handicap (5.15).
Newcastle stat: smart course record
Trais Flours, a Group 1 runner-up in his prime, has a 33 per cent winning strike-rate at the track with four wins from 12 starts. He runs in the 7f handicap (3.45).
Wolverhampton: Carroll eyes all-weather title
Tony Carroll has rolled over the form from his personal-best 2024 into 2025, and he has eight runners on the card as he bids to continue his red-hot run.
After reaching 100 winners in a year for the first time in December, Carroll now has his eyes on the All-Weather Championships trainers' title, and he is also operating at a 25 per cent strike-rate in the last fortnight.
One of the leading hopes among Carroll's runners on the seven-race card is City Cyclone, who bids for a rapid course-and-distance double in the opening 7f handicap (5.30).
The five-year-old was an impressive winner at the track a week ago under William Carson and the duo team up again off top weight of 10st 1lb.
Carroll said: "He did it very well last time and seems to love the track; it seems like all his best performances have come round there.
"We hope he can put in another good run despite being up 6lb, he's going well and we think he can manage it."
