Police seek witnesses after man attacks woman at Newbury

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man assaulted a woman by kneeing her in the groin at Newbury racecourse on Saturday evening.

The woman, who did not need hospital treatment but was left in severe pain, was attacked at approximately 6.30pm near the steps to the grandstand by the Tote betting facilities.

Police believe a number of people would have seen the incident, but no one has yet come forward. Investigating officer PC Will Smith said: “I am particularly keen to speak to a female witness, who is in her mid-twenties, blonde and wearing a light flowery dress, as she was seen speaking to the victim.

“Given the venue and the time of day, I am hopeful that many people would have witnessed the assault, and I would urge them to contact 101, quoting reference number 43180223221.”

With R&B star Craig David taking to the stage after racing on Saturday, there was a bumper crowd in attendance at Newbury and, similar to Lockinge day at the course, there was a police presence and sniffer dogs across the site.

"We're helping the police as much as we can in their appeal for witnesses," said Newbury's head of communications HarrietCollins on Tuesday, while reporting no other major incidents on the day.

She added: "They've asked for CCTV footage and obviously we'll pass over anything that can help with the investigation.

"We worked closely with the police on Saturday and they were there very quickly. They are handling the matter and we're helping them as much as we can."
