Racing has seen its share of miraculous recoveries and amateur rider Mikey Sweeney added another to the album at Killeagh point-to-point, run at Boulta in County Cork on Sunday. For good measure Sweeney went on to win the race in question.

Sweeney was riding Ask Heather for Declan Queally and led on the seven-year-old, who made a mess of the final fence, crashing through it and pecking on landing.

That resulted in the rider being flung forward, desperately clinching the mare's neck as he attempted to regain balance.

Sweeney, somehow, was then able to throw his left leg back over Ask Heather, reuniting himself with a more familiar position in a fashion any Olympic gymnast would be proud of.

He might have thought that a small victory, but, amazingly, his mount picked up and ran on strongly to deny the Colin Bowe-trained Fort Worth Texas by four lengths.

In December 2017, Jack Kennedy did his best impression of an acrobat by hauling himself back into the saddle on Robin Des Mana at Clonmel for a memorable triumph.

Remarkably, only two days later Tony Kelly and Shane Shortall produced their own stunning saves at Wetherby and Aintree.

In his words: Mikey Sweeney on a day he will remember forever
