Former jump jockey and Flat trainer Philip Hide has been appointed trainee clerk of the course at Fontwell and Brighton racecourses.

Hide rode more than 400 winners over jumps in a 19-year career, including 80 winners at Fontwell, and trained 18 winners at Brighton. He has also undertaken other roles in racing, including working as a council member of the Professional Jockeys Association.

He took out his training licence six years ago but 2018 proved tough going, with Hide citing the summer heatwave, which compromised his training methods, as a contributory factor behind his decision to quit. He saddled his final runner at Goodwood last month.

Hide will train with Arena Racing Company regional clerk of the course Charlie Moore before undertaking full BHA accreditation.

He said: “I have been lucky to have enjoyed a long riding career as well as my time as a trainer, but I am excited about the opportunity to train as a clerk of the course and then to taking charge of the racing at both Brighton and Fontwell, two courses I know well.”

Jon Pullin, Arc's director of racing for Fontwell and Brighton, added: “We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Philip on to the team, and for him to undertake his clerk of the course training with us.

"His long-term and wide-ranging experience in the racing industry, particularly at Fontwell Park and Brighton, will no doubt be of huge benefit to both racecourses and to Arc as a whole.”
