Top jockey Ryan Moore and longstanding racecourse volunteer among those to feature in King's birthday honours list

Ryan Moore was not the only one at York on Saturday celebrating being given an MBE in the King's birthday honours.

While the former champion jockey was in action on the track, Angela Tattersall was at the St John Ambulance point next to the John Carr stand.

She has been working at the course for nearly 50 years and was given the award for voluntary services to the first aid charity.

Tattersall, county president of the North Yorkshire and Teesside St John Ambulance, found out about her honour by letter five or six weeks ago and she said: "The first reaction was shock and delight - you think 'Oh heck!' and then you sit down."

She joined St John Ambulance back in 1976 and said: "It looked more interesting than scouts and guides – and it has been! I've done an awful lot."

Other than the Covid behind-closed-doors year, Tattersall has missed just one season at York since 1977.

"We have a great team here and over the years we must have covered everything that's in the first aid book," she said.

"We deal with everything from heart attacks to blisters. There are plenty of blisters, due to shoes that are too tight, shoes that are too big, shoes worn without socks, we've had them all."

Tattersall is a retired learning and development manager at BT and said: "It's been quite a commitment but one I enjoyed - otherwise I wouldn't have kept doing it, would I?

"I work all round the county. I cover a few other sporting events but I do a lot of engagement work nowadays, publicising the organisation."

Asked her age, she admitted to no more than being "60-plus" but stressed: "I will definitely be carrying on in some shape or form.

"I think there might be a nice meal coming up some time next week to celebrate. When I saw all the list of people who got honours at the same time it was great to be among them."

One name was Moore, awarded an MBE for his services to racing and British sport. He has ridden more than 2,600 winners in Britain, including 18 Classics, of which four have come in the Derby.

A three-time British champion jockey, the 42-year-old has been crowned Longines world's best jockey four times and has ridden nearly 3,400 winners worldwide.

He rode Estimate to win the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 2013 for the late Queen Elizabeth II and has registered a total of 92 winners at the royal meeting, where he has won the leading jockey award 12 times and set a new post-war record of nine winners for a single meeting in 2015.

Renowned owner-breeder Kirsten Rausing joined Moore on the honours list after receiving a CBE for services to charity and animal welfare, as well as racing and bloodstock. 

Owner of Lanwades Stud in Newmarket, Rausing has raced many homebreds in her white and green silks, recording notable victories with the Sir Mark Prescott-trained pair of dual Champion Stakes winner Alborada and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe heroine Alpinista.

Richard Lyttle, former manager of Downpatrick racecourse, has also been awarded an MBE for services to the racing industry while one-time Racing Media Group chair Roger Lewis also received an MBE for voluntary services to service personnel and veterans.
