'People were scared and there were women screaming. It was wild'

My girlfriend, my dad and I went for lunch at the seafood and champagne restaurant in the members’ bar and not that far away there were a group of six to eight lads who were completely drunk.

This was around 1pm, and the best way I can describe them is the ‘football hooligan’ types. They were so drunk, rowdy and loud. They were shouting at women and talking about fighting and how good they were at knocking people out.

There were no problems when the racing was on, as far I could tell, but after the last I saw four lads rushing out of the stands, with one of them punching a security guard square in the face before hitting him in the belly, causing him to fall to the floor. Another lad kicked him in the head.

By this point a load more security came out of the grandstand, along with maybe ten or 15 other racegoers. It was a proper fight by now. People were scared, there were women screaming and it was similar to Goodwood the week before. It was wild.

We thought it had happened only outside, but my friend was working at the Frankel bar and told us he thought someone might get thrown off the balcony as it was happening so close to it. The pictures show the smashed window, and glasses were being thrown about, we were told.

My dad and I are members at Goodwood and he was there the Saturday before. I can’t believe it’s happened again just a week later.

You don’t expect to see this sort of thing at Ascot and it was so dangerous. There were people trying to have a normal day and enjoy themselves, but they ended up being around these groups.

It looked like Ascot’s security team handled it a lot better than Goodwood's. They had big blokes and they could handle the situation and were visible. But the fight still went on for ten minutes or so and there was no police presence around it, to control it or, indeed, put people off starting it. I think that would have stopped it happening.
