Frankie Dettori has agreed a new contract on reduced terms to ride as first jockey to Al Shaqab Racing in Britain for 2018.

Under the one-year deal he will continue an association that began in 2013 but under terms that reflect a 50 per cent reduction in the size of Sheikh Joaan Al Thani's British racehorse string.

Dettori's manager Peter Burrell said he could not comment on the financial details after a report in the Times claimed that the jockey's six-figure salary had been halved, but he did confirm: "Frankie's contract has been renewed. The contract is directly driven by the numbers of horses Al Shaqab have here.

"Frankie is looking forward to the association. He's had a lot of success for them. Another key part of his life is riding for John Gosden so he has several places to focus on."

Burrell said he could not comment on the financial details after a report in the Times claimed that the jockey's six figure salary had been halved.

Dettori has already ridden for Al Shaqab this year partnering Toast Of New York in an ultimately disappointing attempt on the the world's richest horse race, the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park on Saturday.

His contract was renewed against the backdrop of reports that Al Shaqab owed more than £1 million in unpaid bills, including to a number of leading trainers, which also fuelled speculation Dettori would not be kept on.

Sheikh Joaan: has reduced his number of horses in training in Britain

As a result Al Shaqab general manager Khalifa Al Attiya issued an apology, blaming a financial review, and gave an assurance the debts would be settled.

With Dettori's availability likely to increase this season, the 47-year-old could pick up more rides for John Gosden, who he had 132 rides for in Britain, and the pair also combined to claim the Arc with Enable.

However, Gosden will also be able to call upon the services of Robert Havlin, who only returned to action in October after serving a six-month drug ban, a suspension he always maintained his innocence over.
