Pauling breaking new ground with Oskar Denarius at Saratoga
New frontiers await Ben Pauling this week, as the trainer has his first runner in the United States on Thursday with Oskar Denarius competing at Saratoga.
A three-time winner since joining Gloucestershire-based Pauling earlier this year, the seven-year-old has the chance to earn some serious dollars competing in the $175,000 Grade 1 AP Smithwick Memorial Steeplechase, where he will be ridden by Tom Garner.
"The owner is best friends with my assistant Tom David and the idea was formed that Oskar Denarius would suit the quick ground in America," explained Pauling on Monday.
"It's been an adventure for Tom and his mate – it's also great for us to have our first runner in America."
The trainer is hoping Oskar Denarius does not find the 2m½f trip to be on the sharp side, and added: "It's a great opportunity for a horse like him to win a big pot. He's in very good order and doesn't bat an eyelid at travelling.
"I'm very hopeful he'll run a decent race, it's exciting and something we'll look to do more of."
Another US raid is already on the cards as stablemate Jaleo is being lined up for the American National at Far Hills in October.
Returning stars
Reporting on matters closer to home, Pauling added: "Nearly all the horses are back in or in pre-training. Willoughby Court has come back looking great and Barters Hill is back in.
"There are lots of very nice youngsters coming through and some nice novice hurdlers for this season."
