Paperwork mix-up leads to Silvestre de Sousa missing Arlington ride
Champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa will miss the ride on Nyaleti in the Grade 1 Beverly D Stakes in Chicago on Saturday after he was prevented from flying to the USA due to a paperwork mix-up.
De Sousa, 38, has been replaced on the Mark Johnston-trained three-year-old by John Egan, who was already at Arlington Park to ride Circus Couture in the Arlington Million for trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam.
The Brazilian's agent Shelley Dwyer said on Saturday the rider had been stopped before he was able to board his plane in Britain, as he had failed to secure the correct documents to ride in the US.
Winner of the German 1,000 Guineas, Nyaleti is a general 9-1 chance for the Grade 1 Beverly D, for which Sistercharlie heads the market for trainer Chad Brown, who has won the last three runnings of the race.
Before that, British trainers had won the three previous editions of the race with Euro Charline (Marco Botti, 2014), Dank (Sir Michael Stoute, 2013) and I'm A Dreamer (David Simcock, 2012).
De Sousa could not be reached for comment on Saturday.
