Former trainer Robert Armstrong yesterday paid tribute to one of his biggest supporters following the death of George A Moore, owner of top post-war sprinter Moorestyle.

Moore, who was 88, made his fortune from the Yorkshire-based furniture group which bears his name and Moorestyle was the horse bought for 4,000gns to help promote the brand.

In 1980 Moorestyle, trained in Newmarket by Armstrong and ridden to most of his victories by his brother-in-law Lester Piggott, won the July Cup, Haydock Sprint Cup, Prix de l'Abbaye, Challenge Stakes and Prix de la Foret, becoming the top-rated horse in Europe.
