Heavy rain leads to non-runners across Britain

York: going eases on Yorkshire Cup card
1 of 1

Heavy rain overnight has resulted in a host of non-runners across the six British meetings on Friday.

There are a total of 11 non-runners at Newmarket, 16 at Newbury and eight at York, where Clever Cookie bids to make history on the final day of the Dante meeting at York – and the ground has come right for him.

He took the Betway Yorkshire Cup last year and a repeat victory would make him only the second dual winner of the race after the legendary Ardross in 1981 and 1982.

The Peter Niven-trained stayer is a mudlark and the ground remains very much on the soft side at York after more rain overnight.

But the testing ground has caused Tom Dascombe to withdraw leading fancy Formidable Kitt from the opening Marygate Stakes for two-year-olds.

After four withdrawals, a field of 11 is set to go to post for the feature 6f handicap at Newbury while Sir Mark Prescott's Cartwright bids for a sixth win in seven starts in the 1m6f handicap at Newmarket.

This evening's highlight is the Braveheart Handicap at Hamilton, for which Red Cadeaux's half-brother Amazing Red makes the 360-mile journey up from Newmarket.

Going update

York Soft, good to soft in places. The course had 4mm of rain overnight and rain was continuing to fall on Friday morning.

Clerk of the course William Derby said: "The good to soft parts are from the 9f pole to the entrance to the home straight.

"The forecast is for the rain to linger until this afternoon so it will be predominantly soft ground."
