Optimism for the future as Epsom basks in the sunshine on successful open day

The sun was certainly shining on the righteous at Epsom on Monday as the market town, which has played host to the Derby for more than two centuries, welcomed visitors from near and far to its annual open day.

Resplendent in the sunshine, yards were abuzz as a healthy crowd first watched workers climb the communal gallops before taking their chance to see behind the scenes at seven local stables.

With the town's famous Downs House Stables set to be revived and trainer Jim Boyle optimistic the never-ending fight to develop his South Hatch Stable may finally reach a positive conclusion that will see the yard reinvigorated, there is hope for the town's prosperity as a training centre.
