Having ridden very few winners over jumps, my views on jockeyship are perhaps not sought out on a daily basis.

On Saturday at Ayr – the highest-quality Scottish National card in my memory – I watched the £100,000 novice championship handicap chase in the company of David Armstrong, who has 20 horses in training with the likes of Chris Grant, Iain Jardine, Ruth Jefferson, Richard Fahey, Pauline Robson and Sandy Thomson.

Armstrong's runner, Acdc, trained by Grant, was ridden by the 7lb claiming amateur Liam Quinlan, of whom I had never even heard.
