In his Monday Column Lee Mottershead highlighted two new initiatives. One was a recently launched website designed to advance the potential pleasures of shared racehorse ownership; the other, amendments to the conditions of 40 or so non-handicaps.

Both are to be applauded but, in truth, their chances of having any real impact on the lack of traction that racing exercises over huge swathes of the general public will be negligible to non-existent.

It is now nearly two years since the BHA announced its desire to see annual racecourse attendances reach seven million by 2020.
