To win the Flat jockeys' title, not only have you needed a lot of talent but, traditionally, plenty of determination and grit.

Previous title battles have been more akin to an ironman contest, with those at the sharp end dashing up hill and down dale for weeks on end in an attempt to land a precious winner or two.

Paul Hanagan, who won back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011, offered a window into the qualities needed to prevail when endorsing fellow rider Danny Tudhope's chances last year.
