Turf Club tweaks to non-trier’s rule might only muddy the water further

A rewording of one specific line could strengthen the regulator's power

It is worth recalling the sequence of events that have led the Turf Club to announce that it is finalising changes to the much-lamented Rule 212, otherwise known as the non-trier’s rule.

Given proceedings in London this week, it is certainly topical.

In April, the Noble Emperor saga brought the issue to a head at Limerick, although you could trace the genesis of the regulator’s internal review of raceday stewarding procedures back to Fairyhouse the previous November, when Tony Martin's Bobbie’s Diamond and Pat Fahy’s Shantou Ed were found guilty under the non-trier’s rule.
