Trainers right to boycott Newbury - and racing needs them to win this fight

In the hour before declarations on Thursday, trainers made the decision that enough was enough and caused the cancellation of Newbury's final scheduled race on Saturday by not confirming any of their runners.

As an owner and a journalist desperate for the sport to be dragged from its never-ending inaction, I admire and support their fortitude (a Scargill supports a strike, there's a surprise, some might mutter...).

In embarrassing Newbury and necessitating racecourses to address the move, trainers stepped up and showed an imposing united front. This can only be beneficial in ensuring participants' voices are forcefully heard during the hammering out of an industry strategy.
