Sixteen months may seem like a long time but those seeking to set up a racecourse-run pool betting operation are already facing a race against the clock.

This week's announcement by the project steering board looking to develop such an operation was a significant milestone but there is still a lot of work to be done to have it up and running before July 2018, when Betfred's exclusive pool betting licence expires.

After failing to take control of the Tote in 2011, Britain's courses have already spent many months examining their options to make sure they do not miss out again.
