This year's King George may not be great but the winner could be

This year's King George, just like last year's King George, is not set to be a vintage running. Yet although the horse who scored 12 months ago was at the time regarded as one of the contest's worst winners, he returns on Saturday with a reputation that has since soared.

The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes once provided one of the most sparkling days in the whole racing calendar. When De Beers departed so did the diamond. The prize has undeniably lost some of its lustre, but that is more linked to other races rising in stature, both close to home and far afield.

Twelve months ago the old race suffered a knock even before some had finished lunch, with Derby hero Golden Horn pulled out because of the testing ground.
