There should be a special award for Evan Williams as champions are crowned

If only all multiple champions cared as much about the grass roots of their sport as Paul Nicholls. The man who will win his 12th title on Saturday afternoon may be in the super league of trainers, but he is a keen supporter of his local courses and no more likely to turn his back on lower-level competition in search of mega riches than he is to win Eurovision.

Similarly, the new champion jockey Harry Skelton is a man who knows the game is about far more than the bright lights and he has ridden winners at 31 different tracks this season. The desire which saw him score at Hexham, Plumpton, Bangor and Southwell in the last triumphant fortnight suggests he will again be the one to beat in 2021-22.

That could be part of a historic – surely unprecedented – family double. Two brothers being champion trainer and jockey is a distinct possibility, for if anyone is breathing down Nicholls' neck it is his former assistant Dan Skelton, who will be clear second this time around. He won four Grade 1 races with novices who should have plenty more to add next season – the exciting My Drogo might even be up to giving the Irish a race next spring.
