How sad the news this week was dominated by the wrapping of a certain chaser in cotton wool when we should have been shouting from the rooftops about another who equalled a record that demands extraordinary toughness and resilience.

In winning the Becher Chase at Aintree, David Pipe's remarkable Vieux Lion Rouge completed the course over the Grand National fences for an astonishing ninth time.

That matched the mark set by Amberleigh House and, even more impressively, Manifesto, who was running at Aintree back when opportunities over the course were far more scarce.
