What's in a name? Plenty if you look at the card for the first day of the Randox Grand National meeting on Thursday.

Aintree knows how to honour its heroes and the opening afternoon is book-ended by races named after Manifesto, the remarkable dual National winner who ran in the race eight times, and Nickel Coin, the last mare to win in 1951.

And the greatest of all is remembered in between, though slightly incongruously the Red Rum Chase – recalling a horse whose three wins may never be matched thanks to Tiger Roll's owners' fit of pique – is run over just two miles.
