Sunday shambles at Punchestown bears out worst fears surrounding Racing TV

Racing TV's coverage of Irish racing on Sunday was an utter shambles. Add to the equation the failure of Punchestown to attract a decent crowd to a prime fixture, and it was a bad day all round for Irish jump racing.

In this space only seven days ago I reflected on how the cancellation of fixtures in Britain afforded the big meeting at Fairyhouse, featuring three Grade 1 races, the rare luxury of monopoly coverage on the Racing TV channel. I concluded that the product was of a standard likely to impress that section of the viewing public not overly familiar with Irish racing.

In the week that Britain prepares to go to the polls, Harold Wilson's famous observation that "a week is a long time in politics" comes to mind.
