Stewards' ballsy Galway Hurdle call could be the catalyst for change in Ireland - and it's about time too
Deputy Ireland editor says the right call was made on Thursday but feels consistency is needed

As the stewards deliberated over the Galway Hurdle, the hacks on track had a natter, too. We wondered when was the last time the result of a big race in Ireland was changed. There was Duntle who was demoted from the Matron Stakes in 2012 but the only other two we could muster up were Sorbus, who was thrown out of the 1978 Irish Oaks, and Kings Lake in the 1981 Irish 2,000 Guineas. The latter got the Classic back from To-Agori-Mou in an appeal a few weeks later.
That's three in the guts of half-a-century. There may be more we forgot, but there may not be either.
That's why Helvic Dream was always favourite to keep the race on Betfair after the market was belatedly reopened and why experienced and highly respected Irish Times racing correspondent Brian O'Connor was convinced the result would remain as it was.
