Ruby Walsh has filled a huge void - now let's hope he fills it on the Flat too

Ruby Walsh has finally rectified a glaring omission in the coverage of jumps racing on terrestrial television. He should now be asked to extend his role as a tactical analyst into the Flat season.

There is widespread recognition, including from my colleague David Jennings, that Walsh's addition to the ITV Racing team has enhanced its output no end. But the burning question is: who will take his place over the summer months? Even though Flat racing is not his natural habitat, it's hard to believe the array of retired Flat jockeys can match Walsh's impact. Whatever the code, he has made the slot his own.

Walsh misses nothing, yet where he is right on the money is in his willingness to critique on demand. He delivers his thoughts with an incisiveness redolent of his riding days, when his tactical acumen was peerless. Where no yard was once forfeited, no word is now wasted.
