I was very sad to hear of the passing away of my friend and colleague Robin Gray, who during a 60-year service to the racing industry ably occupied many areas of the media, both as writer and commentator.

Initially Robin competed as an amateur rider before the writing and broadcasting bug took over, riding out for Peter Cazalet at Fairlawne, where he developed a close affection for the Queen Mother’s horses, especially Makaldar, a portrait of whom adorned his study wall.

He told me the horses would negotiate a steep hill, making Cazalet one of the first exponents of what came to be known as interval training.
