Everyone has their own personal moment when they feel the jumps season moves from the peripheral to the pivotal. The thick of it is imminent.
In five weeks’ time Cheltenham’s Open meeting, Haydock’s Betfair Chase and the Hennessy will be behind us and the first stages of the reshuffle of last season’s old order into something fresh and different will be complete.
Currently, we have the unusual scenario of an eight-year-old who has never jumped a fence in public heading the market for the Gold Cup and on Tuesday at Chepstow Thistlecrack takes his first steps along the potholed road towards the jumps crown.
