Refresh; refresh; refresh - how Betfair's festival market has taken over my life
It was 1.68 going to bed on Sunday night, but when I woke up on Monday morning it had drifted all the way out to 1.74. It was 1.78 by the time I finished my coffee but hardened into 1.74 by the time the mug was washed. That shortened to 1.72 after a shower and by the time I was fully dry it was back at 1.68. Phew, panic over.
She might not have realised it, but I have looked at the 'Will Racing Go Ahead? Cheltenham March 10th' market on Betfair more than I have looked at my wife over the last week. It has become an obsession. It has brought me back to my early teenage years. The Friday nights when I would flick over to Channel 4 for a quick peek of Eurotrash when my mother walked out of the room to make a cup of tea. It was an urge I could never resist.
You know you should not be doing it and deep down you know there is absolutely no substance to it, yet you still cannot help yourself. The shorter the price ‘yes’ is, the better you feel. It is all nonsense really. For all we know, those backing ‘no’ could be binmen talking absolute rubbish rather than medical experts assessing the possible impact of coronavirus. And plenty of those investing large sums on ‘yes’ are probably letting their hearts rule their heads.
