Racing's version of A Christmas Carol - and the present is frightening enough

Ebenezer Scrooge was a bright man, so he understood as soon as his name turned up, somewhat unexpectedly, in an opinion column in the Racing Post that he was about to be used as a metaphor for Everything That Is Wrong With The Great Game. He dutifully laid his head upon the pillow on Christmas Eve but knew he wasn't going to be allowed much sleep.

Suddenly, the room filled with light. "Whoo, I am the Ghost of Racing Past," howled a spirit. "Let me take you back to a happier time."

"Every year, the same thing," groused Scrooge. "Fine, where are we going?"
