Racing may still be a bit prehistoric but it's better than darts and the 1980s

Progress means even women and Roman Catholics get a fair crack of the whip

It may be hard to imagine these days, but there was a time when the sporting landscape was a far bleaker place for those seeking inclusivity on grounds of colour, creed and gender. You think it's bad now? Head back to the 1980s and weep.

It was a time when bananas at football matches were not brought along as part of a high-potassium diet, to follow a prawn sandwich and a bottle of volcanic spring water. They were routinely thrown at some players.

If you went north of the border, the divisions tended to follow different societal fissures. I imagine Glasgow Rangers had their share of racists in the crowd, but they were heavily outnumbered by the religious bigots at a club that wouldn't have knowingly signed a Roman Catholic for love nor money.
