Pro punter Moray Smith marks your card for day one at Aintree - and his best bet is an agonising Cheltenham loser

If the Cheltenham Festival is jump racing’s Premier League, with the season building to its March crescendo, then Aintree’s Grand National meeting is its FA Cup. Everyone still wants to win, but it all feels more relaxed. Tight smiles and tweed are replaced by fake tan and easy laughter.

A Cheltenham winner can define a trainer’s season, but that’s rarely the case here – unless, of course, it comes in the race many consider the biggest of them all, the Grand National. 

Win that and you’ll need to make room for the prefix ‘Grand National winner’, because it’s how you’ll be known for the rest of your days.
