Prize-money cuts in South Africa may sound alarm bells in Britain

Pressure on prize-money is not just an issue for British racing, with cuts set to be made at many of South Africa's courses from next month.

Falling revenues from betting is the issue in South Africa, rather than problems caused by reduced income from media rights as is the case in Britain, but there could be some lessons to be learned by British racing as well as a warning for Alizeti, which is expected to soon become the new owner of the UK Tote.

Racecourse and betting operator Phumelela, along with other stakeholders in South African racing, has come up with a number of measures to address the 13 per cent reduction in prize-money.
