Postcard From Newmarket: Guineas weekend for sure - but not as we all know it
It was Guineas weekend in Newmarket a few days ago but you would not have known it as there was nothing of the 'buzz' associated with the annual two-day Rowley Mile bash around the town on Saturday or Sunday due to the Covid restrictions.
Ordinarily, on 2,000 Guineas day the High Street would be flooded with racegoers, punters and sightseers, many of whom would have got up early from their hotel rooms to congregate at the bottom of Warren Hill to get a flavour of the day.
Then, as the time ticked towards the first race, the trains would arrive from Cambridge with more racefans heading down the Avenue from the station to catch a quick pint in the White Hart Hotel or the Bull to study the form.
