Political climate is increasingly harsh for bookmakers - and that may drive need for racing and betting to rebuild bridges

Gambling industry body the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) is on the lookout for a new chair following last week's news that former Labour MP Michael Dugher is leaving the job with immediate effect.

Events in Westminster in recent days demonstrated what Dugher's successor will have to deal with when it comes to the political climate surrounding gambling. Barely a day went by in parliament last week without some aspect of gambling being discussed, and rarely in a positive light.

Changes to gambling taxation came up as the debate over the Finance Bill continued, while gambling advertising and the impact of gambling harms on children and young people were discussed in two separate debates.
