Commons gathering reflects season of peace and goodwill

Christmas is a time of peace and goodwill to all and there was plenty of both on display at a gathering organised by the All Party Parliamentary Group for Racing and Bloodstock in the House of Commons this week.

Things had been very different at the same event two years ago when Jim Mullen, then chief executive of just Ladbrokes, had told politicians and representatives of both the betting and racing industries that bookmakers had been made to feel unwelcome by the sport.

That was in the wake of the authorised betting partner row and the continued wrangling over the levy.
