Only one winner in this trainers' competition - and that's Donald McCain
The British trainers' championship has been a hot topic this week with Paul Nicholls, Willie Mullins and Dan Skelton assessing their chances of taking top honours, but if the title were decided on the number of winners rather than prize-money the fat lady would have sung long ago.
Donald McCain is out on his own as Britain's most prolific trainer on the 145-winner mark at the start of racing on Friday with five weeks of the season left.
The Cheshire trainer, whose nearest pursuer is Nicholls on 124, has been quietly going about his business with ruthless efficiency, an approach perfectly illustrated in recent days. On Sunday he went to Carlisle with four horses and they all won; the next time he had runners was at Haydock on Wednesday and he left with a double; he then fired in another three winners at Sedgefield on Thursday.
