In a typically erudite Ireland's Eye column on Wednesday, Alan Sweetman detailed the collateral damage of the ongoing debacle surrounding the reappointment of Brian Kavanagh as chief executive of Horse Racing Ireland.
Racing in this country has a raft of serious issues that need to be proactively addressed, yet all the evidence at the moment points to the governing body's hierarchy being distracted by an unnecessary sideshow.
The sport's reputation is being persistently undermined by dint of an appointment that, by any remotely cogent interpretation of state guidelines, is borderline indefensible.
