Aintree and the Jockey Club wanted the unveiling of this year's Randox Health Grand National weights to receive more publicity. Their wish was granted. Much of it was negative publicity, admittedly, but that, perhaps, is splitting hairs.

Some unfortunate scenes at London's V&A museum came, with no little irony, one day after the Jockey Club was responsible for a front page story in The Times. This revealed a relatively minor tightening of restrictions on drinking at the Cheltenham Festival.

It led, however, to an opening paragraph that told readers of "an attempt to curb the antisocial behaviour and drunkenness that has tarnished recent meetings".
