Newbury has undergone an incredible transformation - which shows the value of outsiders coming into racing
The public and racing participants are now getting behind a racecourse whose attendances have soared in 2025

For a sport that can on occasions seem suspicious of outsiders, or at the very least sceptical, the belated commencement of Charles Allen's tenure as BHA chair represents a moment of real significance. It also comes at a time when another former outsider is showing the benefits that can be derived from looking outside the bubble.
When seeking to find a successor to Joe Saumarez Smith, in whose all-too-short life racing was a constant passion, the BHA's nominations committee was not looking for someone who necessarily knew the difference between the September and Sirenia Stakes. They were clear what sort of person they wanted. They also quickly decided exactly who that person was.
It is said that if you want to get something done, you should ask a busy individual. Allen is undoubtedly busy, and has only been contracted to spend one day a week at the BHA. Those who appointed him must believe one day of Allen is worth one week of some of those they rejected.
