Reports suggest chancellor Philip Hammond will accept a £2 FOBT stake

The speculation surrounding FOBT stakes has been lurching one way and then the other even more violently this week.

As the months have passed by without the government delivering its verdict on the Triennial Review, the supposed final figure for the maximum FOBT stake has been predicted on numerous occasions.

In recent months there were reports that culture secretary Matt Hancock favoured a £2 stake, only for the Gambling Commission to recommend that the stake be cut to £30 or less, which led to assumptions that bookmakers had escaped their doomsday scenario.
