Mixed messages from the BBC ought to leave racing with nightmares

How true it is that the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, if the 'Lord' is the BBC, which sent out decidedly mixed messages in the space of less than 12 hours at the weekend.

It was tremendous to go to bed on Friday night with a superb feature on young Billy Loughnane on News at Ten fresh in the memory.

Sports news correspondent Laura Scott visited the 16-year-old riding sensation at his father Mark's yard, in a package that presented him as a young sportsman making huge waves and which allowed plenty of time for interviews with him and his dad. It was rather less than tremendous to wake up on Saturday morning to a report that Radio 4's Today programme may be poised to get rid of its daily racing tips.
