Miller's Breeders' Cup triumph the perfect foil to Europe's equine aristocrats
After two days of stunning upsets, perhaps the biggest of them all was that Peter Miller emerged as the leading trainer at the Breeders’ Cup.
Peter who, you might ask? Peter Miller: the man who had saddled just five previous Grade 1 winners over 30 years until he bagged a brace at Del Mar on Saturday. For those of us watching at home on television, Miller’s ecstatic reaction was the highlight of the entire gig.
Chad Brown was the only other trainer to saddle two winners – Bob Baffert drew a blank for the first time in five years – but Miller is entitled to premier billing after his one-two in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. The way he jumped with joy illustrated the unique emotional high of orchestrating a giantslaying at the highest level of the sport.
