On Thursday there will be a gathering of the jumping clan in Lambourn for a service of thanksgiving, and many would happily walk the last mile barefoot to be there.

If ever a racing life was worth giving humble and heartfelt thanks for it was that of Christopher Mordaunt, the former senior handicapper who died on January 24 at the age of 82.

Tall, bespectacled, twinkling of eye, with an ever-present smile and a chortle never far away, Mordaunt was one of those rarities who brought warmth to the world.
