To those of a certain age and disposition, last Friday, May 26, marked the 50th anniversary of a defining moment in popular culture, the release by the Beatles of their eighth studio album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, a work that was innovative, influential and critically acclaimed.

As I read about the anniversary in Saturday's newspaper, just after studying the weekend cards for the Curragh, I thought of the opening line of the album's opening track, and pondered the coincidence.

"It was twenty years ago today
Sergeant Pepper taught the band to play"
