Let's make Royal Ascot 2021 one for the viewers - and here's how

Getting into the minutiae of television ratings rarely appeals as time well spent, but it was hard to resist being heartened by the viewing figures for Royal Ascot. Maybe it is the coping-mechanism desire to see something good come of the present situation.

The obvious conclusion is readily taken. Handed the sporting stage largely, but by no means wholly, to itself racing still has a draw which is more than healthy.

Naturally, ITV's success at Ascot and Guineas weekend confirmed everyone's existing suspicions. For my part, it should finally bury any inclination to go toe-to-toe with other sports, football in particular.
