Joyless Sandown officials produced the worst piece of stewarding for 31 years

Sandown is now the scene for the two worst pieces of stewarding in my lifetime.

Nothing will ever come close to capping Cahervillahow's disqualification from the 1991 Whitbread Gold Cup, but a dozen-day suspension for Christophe Soumillon for a brief lapse in concentration after winning last Saturday's epic Eclipse on Vadeni exasperated me more than any decision in the interim.

It deserved a day, if even that, but how the stewards could justify a 12-day ban is beyond me. Well, actually it is not beyond me at all. I know exactly why.
