John Berry had every right to be 'pissed off' - he deserved a proper inquiry
It is not every day a Racing TV presenter has to apologise for bad language. Post-race interviews are usually conducted in a predictable happy-go-lucky manner wherein the winning jockey/trainer/owner enthuse over the horse's performance, muses on how they will improve for the run, etc, while having no need to burst into any profanity.
Not so in the case of Newmarket trainer John Berry, who vented his frustration (for perspective, his verbal crime was saying he was "pissed off") to the cameras when his runner Dereham was impeded – in Berry's eyes intentionally – by Kevin Stott riding the victorious Wynford during an enthralling duel in the 2m2f handicap at Pontefract on Monday.
The pair had been neck and neck for the whole of the home straight, with Wynford gradually carrying them over to the stands' rail. As that continued with just over half a length separating them, Faye McManoman was forced to snatch up the unlucky runner-up 110 yards from the line lest they plough into the rails. With their chance gone, McManoman eased up and went down by what strictly on paper looks a decisive four and three-quarter lengths.
