Apparently the turf season finished on Saturday. There was no November Handicap as Doncaster was washed away so it ended with a whisper rather than the usual whimper. A shame really, as it was one of the best of recent times.

That King George joust gets me giddy every time I think about it. I remember being convinced Enable had left every last drop of energy inside that gruelling final furlong only for Frankie Dettori to make fools of us all as the replay showed he only flicked her once, and that was just after passing the two-furlong pole.

Or what about Battaash in the Nunthorpe? He was supposed to hate York as much as we hated going to church as kids, yet his ten rivals did not have a prayer from halfway. Pinatubo wasn’t bad either, was he? It took Enable 15 outings, ten Group 1s, four years and two Arcs to earn a rating of 128; he did it in five months.
