Irish juveniles flying high despite Siskin failing to read Middle Park script

Siskin's unexpected antics in the stalls at Newmarket on Saturday sparked disappointment on several fronts. It would have been most keenly felt by Ger Lyons and Colin Keane, and by owner Khalid Abdullah on Juddmonte's showpiece day.

The colt's enforced withdrawal robbed us of a rare enough chance to assess the relative merits of British, French and Irish juvenile form in the Middle Park.

Earthlight, the first French-trained winner of the 6f Group 1 event since his trainer Andre Fabre captured it with the Sheikh Mohammed-owned pair Lycius and Zieten in the early 1990s, won snugly in the end, in the manner of a colt who appears to have every chance of getting a mile next season. It would have been fascinating to see the Prix Morny winner in a duel with Siskin who brought a similar profile to Newmarket, as a Group 1 winner unbeaten in four races.
