Incessant media carousel makes the concept of holidays a distant pipedream

It is not easy for journalists to slip their professional shackles when taking a week's leave. Whether it is consumed online or in print, news remains a central tenet of British life.

The same is true of television. Unlike the baggage reclaim facility at Stansted airport, the media carousel never stops turning. And generally speaking, watching it spin uncontrollably on its axis while on holiday serves to make the heart grow fonder.

This, however, was not one of those weeks. It started well enough with a few days of R&R, but it went quickly downhill when I tuned in to the World Athletics Championships on the BBC.
